La visita del mar / Javier Sologuren

The Sea’s Visit

I’m a body that flees, a shadow maturing
with a murmur of leaves in your glance
just like the cruel and splendorous midday:
sea, lost wing, snow eyelashes,
chaste sleepwalker amidst corrupted matter,
silk wave in which I flicker sadly.

All words are mine when I stand at the edge
of your eyes, sea, all silence is mine.

Strange host who disturbs me,
an instant I now inhabit slowly
blessed, melancholic, desert, penetrating.

I’m not within me, I’m not mine, wind are my eyes,
sea, now that they watch you, now that your face
lifts me extensively awake in the void,
myself a white horse, immaterial, naked.

Furtive stepping, sea; guide me to you
when the night is a palm leaf within
and my body is merely the blandest snow,
whimpering shadow, triumphant weight of gold.
I open a window in the heights of the night.
In my eyes the dream is an ice toy,
a precious arrow that won’t be able to reach me.

(Visible ear of the star, check me.)

Sea, uncertainty opens its veins from your chest,
the brief fire of single pearls singing,
mute, terrestrial ray burns me all the way to my hair.

The night air, your blind celestial fingers;
your deep satin, sea, burning peacefully.

(The beautiful light is already on it’s way dancing on feet.)

Pure, final beach, sea, where we’re nothing
a ghost amid flowers of dawn.

[Árbol que eres un penoso relámpago] / Javier Sologuren

[Tree you're a shy lightning bolt]

Tree you're a shy lightning bolt,
wind that ravages a burning material,
forest of rays amid nocturnal water;
should I tell them a heavy jewel
is being forged for me in my heart a leaf
breaks the blood's refuge like a star?

Ignore another look as long as it's like flight
profound and reposed, I ignore another far step,
wave that were clearer than the life in my chest.

Know that I'm living, clouds, know that I sing,
beneath the afternoon's confused glory, alone.

Know that I'm living, that the sky is squeezing me,
that my forehead will fall as an empty lamp
at the feet of a statue who awaits tenaciously.

[Árbol que eres un penoso relámpago]

Árbol que eres un penoso relámpago,
viento que arrebatas una ardiente materia,
bosques de rayos entre el agua nocturna;
¿he de decirles que para mí se está forjando
una pesada joya en mi corazón, una hoja
que hiende como una estrella el refugio de la sangre?

Ignoro otra mirada que no sea como un vuelo
reposado y profundo, ignoro otro paso lejano,

Translator's note:
I encountered Sologuren's work four years ago in Venezuela, in a wonderful late collection called Un trino en la ventana vacía (Caracas: Monte Ávila Editores, 1998), which was awarded the 1995 Premio Internacional de Poesía Pérez Bonalde. It's a book I've returned to frequently since I first came across its air-inscribed poems. Lines I stole from and savored, such as:

"Pero la belleza, las flores, las aves, sobre nuestras cabezas,
las nubes en su callada música,"

I only found out tonight, as I was typing this text, that he died last spring in Lima at the age of 83.

(¿para nada?)

Javier Sologuren

el fuego del tiempo
se consume a sí mismo

esa rosa ya no dura
mas que su perfume

llevo un milenio
resplandeciéndome
en las uñas

el polvo es la ceniza
de una
inmutable mariposa

los extremos del sueño
escapan dando gritos

la luz única
que solamente
solo percibo
huye por los márgenes
de esta página
donde
una vez más
la escritura
se encuentra con la nada

(¿para nada?)
